10 Ways to Cope with Miami Time

Being Productive in Miami Time is like rolling a boulder upward while you had a few mojitos in you. There is just so much to do in the magic city that tempts your ambitions to be held off for another summer. To add on top of it all, Miami is infamously known to be characterized by its time perspectives. Here are 10 ways to cope with Miami Time.

Plan Ahead

Being future oriented in Miami can be tricky because you never know what to expect. The weather, traffic reports and Happy Hour specials can get in the way of what you’ve got to get done. Add your daily goals on a list and plan the average time for them to be completed, rather than when to start. For example: Finish Workout at Gym Before 8pm; This adds a sense of urgency to my schedule when its 7:45 pm and I’m still on Instagram looking at 305 twerk videos.

Keep in Mind Miami Time is Transient

Everyone perceives time differently in Miami. The clock on our soil is like peering into a rip in the space time continuum. The internal gut clock is our true indicator of where we have to be, and if we are not aligned to it, then you flake.

Add a Traffic Schedule

Every schedule should have a slot for the Traffic. ALWAYS play it safe and say you are going to be late an hour. Even if you planned the meeting months ago. Also have a schedule when you cannot make a meeting because that is the highest point of Miami Traffic. If you have an interview and the employers asks to meet at 9am or 4pm, reschedule.

Turn off All Distractions for 2 Hours a Day

This is my secret to getting it done. If I stay away from any dings and blings for two hours. I can stare at my blank screen for the first hour and out of boredom have something done by the second.

Wake up 2 Hours Before Anything

Get up earlier than the time you intend to get somewhere or do something. Inside those two hours, fight the urge to fall asleep on the floor rug and start making yourself a good breakfast. The kind of nutrition that gets you lasting for the day, and I’m not talking about Nutrigrain. Then you can wake up hungover and realize you were dreaming about having a good breakfast and now you’re late.

Show up Early and do Something Else

When you get to where you want to go, show up early and have something to do when you get there. Whenever I have a performance to do, I get to the location and walk down the street to another. That way when the person texts: “Where you at?”, I can say I’m Right Down the Street and actually mean it.

Practice the Art of Rescheduling

There’s no shame in rescheduling. As a matter of fact, it can be very refreshing in Miami instead of just not showing up at all. If you text or call a rescheduling request your reputation can easily be maintained as somewhat reliable. 

Have an Hour of Multi-Tasking

One of the biggest obstacles of getting anything done is the Multi-Tasking. When you run around looking for something else to do at the same time while doing something, it will take you longer. Be strict about your multitasking hour. If someone comes knocking on your office window; lift up your finger and point at a sign that says: I’ll handle it after 3pm today.

Focus on the Task at Hand

This one takes some brain muscle. Doing one thing only while you have the song Panda on your mind is like lifting a dumbbell that weighs like a Panda at a gym thats playing the Panda song at the same time.

Turn off your Wifi

Just turn it off if you have something to do. If it requires internet use, set up a website blocker. The internet crowds up your time and its just too easy to drift off to. Sometimes you may not have a choice if the internet bill wasn’t paid, and this can be a productivity blessing in disguise.
