Miami is one of the most popular cities in the nation, and whenever a home grown comedy star is born; we get a tingly feeling inside. I was able to catch up with Comedian Mario Ramil and ask him a few interview questions before his big show at Stage 305 this weekend.
5 Questions With Miami Comedian Mario Ramil
1) What can we expect from this Friday’s show at Stage 305 in Magic City Casino? What’s it like to perform at Stage 305?
A much needed distraction! We are living in some crazy and complicated times, saturated with negativity and news of disasters all around the world…comedy is needed now more than ever. So that’s what I’m brining to the stage, a moment to breath, laugh and take it easy for a second.
Performing at Magic City is intense, the stage is so massive and the room is enormous! It’s a little intimidating at first; getting used to the reverb of the room and how the laughs and your voice travels around…plus not really being able to see the audience. but after you adjust, it really becomes like any other stage x 2 and you walk away with an amazing experience. A very David and Goliath type of moment.
2) What graced upon you to come up with the Cuban Doctor Skit? How did you develop such a spot on character?
For the most part, a lot of my material usually derives from real life experiences. Growing up I had an old school Cuban Doctor…and by that I mean, there was no technological advancements in his office/home. A stethoscope, a bottle of vix, and a bible in case things went south. His medical evaluations of me where primarily done visually and many times finished by him telling my mother I needed to “man up and get a job”. But I didn’t know many 7 year olds with employment so it was hard to get a reference. Even as a kid I thought that to myself, this could be developed into some sort of character or situation, I found it all so funny. So fast forward about 17 years later and I’m at home with a headache because I hate taking pills for that. My girlfriend sees here’s take these two pills, stop being stubborn! And hands them to me. I hesitate, then take one. She’s like why aren’t you taking two?? I said I don’t want to…she then gives me that disappointed “how did I end up with this fucking guy” look and says “it’s only 200 milligrams you baby! And that made me laugh so hard! It just sounded like something my old doctor would say, so instantly something clicked, I saw a scene in my head. That day I worked on the voice at work like a good employee and when I got home I started filming. Pretty much improvised must of it and later that night posted it. The rest is history.

3) What would you recommend to be the next video skit on your youtube channel?
Well there’s certainly some diversity when it comes to stuff I put out on my channel. From music, to sketches, to interviews. It’s really up to what you want to watch and what mood you’re in.

4) Coming from the Miami comedy scene, what do you think is next, what are your expectations, and how do you plan on getting there?
The city is constantly growing in the arts! There’s always something exciting happening in Wyndwood or The Beach. And comedy is starting to really be its own thing here, doesn’t have to be integrated with other arts. Not that it’s a bad thing but it’s nice to see any venue have a comedy night. And it’s even cooler when audiences are really coming out and supporting. As for me, I’d love to get to the point where I could do comedy full time. Maybe have my own show on a network, star in a comedy movie. You know,…little stuff like that.
