Miami tattoos say a lot about you. You can be standing in line at a Publix in Westchester, look at the guy in front of you, see his forearm and go, “Yeah. He’s from here.” No accent needed. No license plate needed. The ink tells the whole story. So I sat down with the people in the livestream chat and we broke down the most Miami tattoos you can get, from the basic to the legendary, so you know exactly what you’re looking at next time you’re on the beach or in line for a colada.
The Palm Tree Is the Starter Pack of Miami Tattoos
The most common tattoo that tells somebody you’re from Miami is the palm tree. It’s that simple. We have palm trees everywhere. We plant them in the middle of the street just for decoration. Go to Miami Beach and they’re lined up like they’re waiting for valet. Everybody’s backyard has one, and half of them have a coconut that’s about to fall on your cousin’s head.
Now palm trees grow in a lot of places. But when you see a palm tree on somebody’s body, you don’t think Puerto Rico. You don’t think the Dominican Republic. You think Miami. That’s the power of the brand.
But let’s be real, a plain palm tree is a little basic. You’ve got to add a little something extra. You know the palm tree they put on the sewer lids? The manhole covers on the street with the palm tree and the year the city was founded? Get that one. That’s custom. That says you know the city down to the drainage system. And if you’re asking how many palm trees is too many, the answer is there’s no such thing. Get a whole sleeve. Just palm trees all the way up. People will know you’re from the 305 from across the parking lot.
There’s a Difference Between a Flamingo and a Miami Flamingo
The flamingo tattoo is a big one. But you have to understand there is a flamingo tattoo, and then there is a Miami flamingo tattoo. Big, big difference.
A regular flamingo is just standing there on one leg looking pink. A Miami flamingo is wearing sunglasses and a gold chain. Somebody in the chat said dominoes and a rented Lamborghini, and they’re right. It’s got to be rented, because that’s how you know it’s real. Nobody in Miami owns the Lamborghini in their Instagram. The flamingo has to be wearing a hat, a gold chain, holding a cocktail, and if you put some palm trees behind it, bonus points. That flamingo didn’t just come from Miami. That flamingo has a promoter.
And honestly, the gold chain rule goes for everything. The most Miami tattoo you can get is putting a gold chain on anything. You’ve got a skull? Put a gold chain on it. That’s 305. You’ve got a portrait of somebody? Gold chain. 305. A pineapple? Gold chain. Now it’s a Miami pineapple.
Pitbull, Scarface, Bad Bunny and the Dolphins
Pit bull tattoos are very Miami, and I mean that two ways. First, the dog. Miami-Dade banned pit bulls for decades, and people still walked them up and down the street with pride, posted them on Instagram and tagged Miami, Florida, like, “Come get me.” So if you tattoo an angry pit bull on your body, that’s very Miami. Double down and put a gold chain on him too.
Second, Pitbull the singer. If you have Mr. Worldwide tattooed on you, I’m not even going to argue. You are from here. Dale.
Scarface is another classic. Any scene. Him with the machine gun. Him standing in front of the bricks. Him in front of the big sculpture that says “The World Is Yours.” Any frame of Al Pacino as Tony Montana is a Miami tattoo, even though, let’s be honest, half the city has never watched the whole movie. They’ve just seen the poster in a barbershop.
And now there’s a new generation. Get yourself a Bad Bunny tattoo. Maybe a lyric spoke to you. Something about baddies and VIP and you went, “Man, that’s my life as a local.” Some of those lyrics really hit the nail on the head about Miami life, so shout out to Bad Bunny for giving the 305 something new to put on its ribs.
Then there’s the Miami Dolphins tattoo, and this one is a warning. Do not mess with a Dolphins fan who has the Dolphins logo tattooed on them. If I see you at Hard Rock being loud and obnoxious and I see that logo on your calf, I’m not saying anything. Enjoy the game, sir. Especially if it’s the old logo. The old logo means you’ve been suffering for a long time and you have nothing left to lose.
Now if somebody has a Dolphins tattoo that looks off, like the dolphin is a little too happy and the colors are wrong, that’s a prank. That’s a guy who just moved here, walked into a shop and said, “I want a Miami Dolphins logo.” And the artist goes, “What’s your phone number?” “212.” “I got you, bro.” And just freestyled it.
The No Regrets Tattoos
Here’s where it gets real. Even a messed up portrait tattoo is very Miami. You’re commemorating somebody you love. Your grandma. A brother that passed away. Somebody important. And sometimes you need that tattoo right now and the budget isn’t there, because Miami is expensive and rent just went up again. So the portrait comes out looking a little like a potato. That’s fine. It’s not about the quality of the tattoo. It’s about the quality of the love. Abuela would understand. She’d still say it doesn’t look like her, but she’d understand.
Commemorating Hurricane Andrew is another no regrets tattoo. That was one of the darkest, most visceral storms ever to hit this city. It rocked my house. It messed up a lot of homes here. If you lived through Andrew and you want that on your arm, respect.
Then there’s “305 Till I Die,” and that one comes with responsibility. I remember a hurricane coming at us that was supposed to be way past a category 5, and the call went out to evacuate, and people started leaving Miami and clogging up the expressways. And I’m thinking, what happened to 305 Till I Die? You can’t have that tattoo and be sitting in traffic on the Turnpike heading to Orlando. If you’ve got 305 Till I Die on your body, you have to stand your ground like the people in Key West. Board up the windows, fill up the bathtub and start a domino game. That’s the contract you signed with the needle.
The Miami Tattoo Nobody Has Gotten Yet
Here’s my question. Why is it always palm trees, skylines, flamingos and alligators? How about the traffic? Why can’t we get a tattoo of a bunch of cars stuck on the Palmetto with a big Pitbull logo floating above it? That would be beautiful. What does that tattoo represent? The hardships of everyday life in Miami. The struggle of living in these streets. Toll booths. Construction cones. A guy selling roses at the red light. That’s real Miami art.
So if you’re thinking about getting some Miami ink, now you know the options. Palm tree if you want to play it safe. A Miami flamingo with a chain if you want to make a statement. Pitbull if you want to make it a lifestyle. And 305 Till I Die only if you’re ready to ride out the next storm at home with the rest of us. Tell me what your most Miami tattoo is. I want to see it.
