Getting an Oil Change in Miami Is a Poker Game

Getting an oil change in Miami is not car maintenance. It’s Texas Hold’em. You walk into that shop, you sit across the counter from a guy in a work shirt with his name stitched on it, and both of you are trying to read each other. Does he have pocket aces, or is he holding a 10-2 and bluffing about your timing belt? Because that’s how they get you, man. You came in for oil and somehow you’re walking out with a $900 estimate and a feeling in your stomach like you just lost the house.

I’ve been playing this game my whole life, and I finally figured out how to win. So here’s my strategy for the next time your maintenance light comes on.

How to Get an Oil Change in Miami Without Getting Played

Rule number one: you lead. You don’t walk in and ask, “Hey, my light’s on, what do I need?” That’s like walking up to the poker table and showing everybody your cards. Now he gets to decide what’s wrong with your car, and trust me, something is going to be wrong with your car.

What I do is I walk in and I tell him. “What’s up, man. My maintenance light is on. It’s time to change the oil.” Done. I diagnosed my own car. I didn’t even realize I was doing it until I said it out loud on the podcast, but that’s the move. You go in like you already know what’s going on, so he doesn’t come back twenty minutes later with a clipboard and a sad face like a doctor about to give you news.

And then you look him in the eye. You don’t blink. You stare at him like, “Don’t you dare lie to me. Don’t you dare.” Miami mechanics respect eye contact. Abuela taught us that at the fish market.

I’ve also seen those little gadgets on TV ads where you plug it into the port under your steering wheel and an app tells you everything that’s wrong with your car. If I had one of those, I would wear it around my neck like a chain. Walk into the shop holding it up like a rapper. “Yeah. I’m here for an oil change. And before you say anything, I already know what it is.” As seen on TV. He’s not telling me nothing.

The Timing Belt Bluff

Let me tell you about the time I called a mechanic’s bluff. I took my car in for an oil change, just an oil change, and the guy comes back with this whole speech. “Your timing belt has a little crack on it. You need to replace it. It’s going to be about 180.”

I looked him in the eye. I was trying to get a read. Does he have the aces? Or is he holding nothing? And I went, “We’ll skip that for today.” And I let it ride.

Now in my head, that mechanic got me. I’m driving around thinking any second now that belt is going to snap and I’m going to be stuck on the side of the Palmetto in August with no AC and a guy selling mangoes walking up to my window. That’s what they do to you. They put the fear in you. I drove it everywhere. I even drove it up north to visit my grandma. Nothing happened.

Then I went back for my next oil change, different shop, different mechanic. They did a “28 point inspection.” I braced myself. And the guy comes back and goes, “You’re good, we just did the oil.” He didn’t even mention the timing belt. I knew it. That first guy was bluffing with a 7-2 offsuit and I took the pot.

Three Car Fixes You Should Stop Paying For

Here’s where I save you money. There are three things I will never pay a shop to do again, because each one costs you thirty to fifty bucks and it’s five minutes of work with a YouTube video.

Number one is the cabin air filter, the one for your AC. I used to pay for that every single time. Then one day I said, let me just figure out what this cabin filter thing even is. Bro. It’s a little cabinet behind the glove compartment. It snaps open, you pull out the old filter, you put the new one in, you snap it closed. That’s it. The filter itself is like eight to twelve dollars. I was paying fifty. In Miami, where your AC is basically life support, you should be changing that thing often anyway, so you might as well learn to do it yourself and stop breathing whatever’s been growing in there since hurricane season.

Number two is the engine air filter. There’s a box under the hood. You unclip it, move it to the side, take out the dirty filter, drop in the clean one, clip it back. Fifty bucks saved, if not more.

Number three is the light bulb in the back of your car. When a tail light goes out, it’s easier to change than you think. And in Miami you want that bulb working, because the only thing worse than a mechanic upsell is getting pulled over on 836 for a busted tail light while you’re already late.

Why Car Maintenance in Miami Hits Different

Car stuff is stressful anywhere, but Miami makes it extra. The heat down here eats car batteries alive. Two summers and your battery is tired, so when the guy says you need a new one, you don’t know if he’s lying or if Florida just did what Florida does. The salt air is out here rusting everything that’s near the beach. The rain floods the street in front of your house every afternoon at 4 PM, and now you’re wondering if water got somewhere it shouldn’t.

And we drive everywhere. Nobody here is taking the bus to Kendall. Your car is your office, your closet, your dining room and sometimes your second apartment when the AC at home is broken. So when it goes down, your whole life goes down. Mechanics know that. They see the desperation in your eyes. That’s why you have to show up with a poker face.

You ever have that moment where you’re picking your car up and you’re trying to figure out if it’s driving different? Like, was that noise there before? Is the steering a little off? You ever get your car back and the next day something else dies? You start getting paranoid. You start thinking the shop is sitting in the back like a casino, waiting for you to come back so they can take more of your chips.

My Final Strategy at the Mechanic

These days I go to the dealership that sold me the car, and I still play poker with them. I walk in, I tell them what I need, I look them in the eye, and I get a read. If something sounds off, I say “let me think about it,” and I go watch a video or call my cousin who knows cars. Every Miami family has one cousin who knows cars. Use him. That’s what he’s there for. He’ll tell you for a plate of arroz con pollo.

So here’s the cheat sheet. Lead with what you need. Keep eye contact. Learn the three five-minute fixes. And when somebody tells you your timing belt is about to explode, it’s okay to say, “We’ll skip that for today.” Worst case, you’re wrong and you learn something. Best case, you just took the whole pot.
