Somebody on the podcast hit me with one of those rich people questions: would you rather get a free house in Hialeah or a nice low rent apartment in Miami? At first I said the apartment, because I misread it. Then I understood. Free house? In Hialeah? Are you kidding me? I’m not paying rent ever again. And I knew right away what I’d do with it. I’d open a Hialeah Airbnb, and not one of those gray couch, white wall, “modern minimalist” Airbnbs either. I’m giving people the full Hialeah experience. If I ever get a property in Hialeah, I’m making it as Hialeah as humanly possible.
Why a Hialeah Airbnb Beats Wynwood and South Beach
Here’s my pitch to every tourist who flies into MIA. You think you’ve seen Miami because you took a picture in front of a mural in Wynwood. You think you’ve seen Miami because you paid thirty dollars for a mojito on Ocean Drive. You went to Brickell, you saw the buildings, you saw a guy in a Patagonia vest walking a dog that costs more than my car. Cool. That’s the brochure. That’s not Miami.
Wynwood is touristy. Brickell is touristy. South Beach is basically a theme park with a parking problem. If you want the real heart and soul of Miami, you go to Hialeah. Hialeah is a pretty good representation of the culture of this city, and nobody is putting on a show for you there. The lady at the ventanita isn’t performing. The guy fixing his car in the driveway at 7 AM isn’t performing. That’s just Tuesday.
And honestly, imagine the Uber ride. You get picked up at the airport and the driver goes, “Where to?” and you say Hialeah. He turns around, looks at you, and nods with respect. “Okay. You know what you’re doing.” That’s when your vacation starts.
Chickens Included
Number one on the listing: chickens. There will be chickens running around everywhere, because that’s authentic. I’m posting a picture of those chickens right on the Airbnb profile so nobody can say they weren’t warned. Chickens included. And when I say included, I mean included. If you want breakfast, lunch or dinner, the chickens are right there. Do whatever you want. We’ll replace them. It’s in the cleaning fee.
People from up north will read that and think it’s a joke. It’s not a joke. Anybody who has driven through Hialeah knows the roosters run that city. They don’t care about your alarm. They wake up when they want, they cross the street when they want, and they’ve never once looked both ways. Honestly, they drive better than half the people on Okeechobee Road.
The reviews write themselves. “Five stars. A rooster woke us up at 4:45 AM. We felt alive. Will be back.”
Cuban Coffee in the Kitchen
Number two: the kitchen. Forget the little Keurig with the sad pods. My Hialeah Airbnb comes with the best Cuban coffee you will ever have in Miami. A real grinder. A cafetera on the stove. And a little espumita machine, because I’m not about to have my guests standing over the counter beating sugar with a spoon for ten minutes like my abuela did. Okay, actually, that’s part of the experience too. I’ll leave a spoon and instructions. Hand whipped espumita, that’s a premium add on.
I’m also leaving the little plastic thimble cups, so when the neighbor comes over to say hi, and the neighbor will come over to say hi, you can offer her a colada like a local. That’s how you make friends in Hialeah. You don’t shake hands. You pour.
And if a guest asks for oat milk, I’m canceling the reservation. I’m sorry. Read the house rules.
The Celia Cruz Room and the Gloria Estefan Room
Here’s where it gets classy. Every room in the house is themed after a legend. You’ve got the Benny Moré room. You’ve got the Celia Cruz room. And you’ve got the Gloria Estefan room. I’ll be honest, when I came up with this live on the podcast, I blanked on Celia Cruz’s name for a second, and that’s embarrassing. Celia Cruz. The Queen of Salsa. I had to sit with that. My Cuban card got suspended for about thirty seconds.
But the rooms will be beautiful. The Celia Cruz room is loud, bright, colorful, maybe a big framed “Azúcar” over the bed so you wake up motivated. The Gloria Estefan room is more Miami Sound Machine energy, a little 80s, some mirrors, and the rhythm is going to get you whether you like it or not. The Benny Moré room is for the guests who appreciate the classics. Old records, a little bolero playing when you check in, and a guayabera hanging in the closet for you to borrow. Just bring it back ironed.
That’s how I’d sell it. Not “cozy 3 bed 2 bath near the Palmetto.” No. “The Hialeah Experience.” People would love it. They’d go home and tell everybody they found the real Miami, and they’d be right.
Why the Hialeah Experience Would Actually Work
The funny part is, the more I talked about it, the more I realized it’s actually a good idea. You get a regular house in Hialeah, you don’t need anything fancy, and you turn it into a cultural experience for people who are tired of the same Instagram Miami. Tourists right now want something real. They don’t want to sleep in a building where the lobby smells like a candle called “Ocean Breeze Luxury.” They want stories. They want to sit in a plastic chair on a porch, drink a cafecito, and listen to two old men argue about baseball like it’s a matter of life and death.
Hialeah isn’t a bad area at all, and that’s what outsiders get wrong. It’s a working city with good food, strong coffee, and people who will tell you exactly what they think of you within five minutes of meeting you. That’s not rude. That’s customer service, Hialeah style. You always know where you stand.
So if anybody out there wants to give me a free house in Hialeah, I’m ready. I already have the business plan. Chickens included, coffee on the stove, Celia on the wall. Five stars. Book early, because once the roosters find out, prices are going up.
